BIZARRE
WEATHER CANCELS BGB MOTORSPORTS' RUN TO THE FRONT
For Immediate Release
(DAYTONA BEACH, FL - August 3, 2006) Saturday's Grand-Am
Cup 200 mile event at Barber Motorsports Park was canceled
with nearly an hour of racing remaining, due to approaching
severe weather. Rain had been a threat all weekend long for
the 40 car GS field but so were the BGB Porsches. The race
was called short because of inclement weather and as a result,
so was the charge that Craig Stanton and Mikel Miller had
in plan for the rest of the field. Both cars were topped
up with fuel and fresh tires, ready to launch their assault.
It never happened though, as they were forced to settle for
the 8th and 11th place finishing positions when almost an
hour of good racing was taken away from them. The #84 Mitchell
Rubber Porsche 996 of Ted Ballou and John Tecce never took
the green flag because of an incident that occurred in Saturday
morning's practice while Tecce was behind the wheel.
Putting on a fantastic show for their guests from Intown
Suites, the #38 Porsche 996 of Mark Plummer and Craig Stanton
was no slower than 6th quick in any of the official practice
sessions, securing the 2nd and 3rd spots in two of those
sessions. Mark Plummer qualified the Intown Suites Porsche
in 3rd place. On lap 1, Plummer moved into 2nd place where
he remained until lap 35. Never running outside of the top
3, he brought his Porsche to pit road for tires, fuel and
Craig Stanton. As the order cycled through, and cars on a
two stop strategy completed their 2nd stop, Stanton landed
in 8th place ready for his run to the front. That run was
never executed though as the race was ended prematurely.
Tim Traver qualified his #83 SimpleNet.com Porsche 996 in
15th place. His opening stint was solid as he traded spots
several times to deliver his car to codriver Mikel Miller
during the first full course caution. Mikel Miller joined
Patrick Long and Bill Auberlen in the field, as they were
all on similar strategies. Miller diced through traffic to
settle into 11th place where he'd pit for tires and fuel
for his run to the finish. Just like Craig Stanton, Miller's
opportunity to put his head down and go was taken away when
the rains came.
During the weekend, Ted Ballou showed that he was able to
continue to get acclimated to his Mitchell Rubber Porsche
996 as he began to run times that would have landed him well
inside the top 20 for qualifying. It was very unfortunate
that he was not able to race the #84 Porsche, for he would
have enjoyed a strong run. Ballou will rejoin the BGB crew
at VIR for the 6 hour finale in October.
Tape delay television coverage will be available on Speed
TV on August 5th at 1:00pm.
